The clang of weapons rang out through the training room, a mix of grunts and battle cries filling in the space between. I watched Ransom from across the vast chamber as he fought yet another sicari recruit. The girl was young, only seventeen. She’d been jerked out of training on the Isle of Mordis to battle the rebel king and a fanging god. A pit of dread formed in my gut. Did we really even stand a chance? My fingers tightened around bardy, the feel of the worn shaft oddly comforting amid the chaos.

Ransom took it easy on the girl, moving at a quarter of his normal speed and still it was clear she was no match. My heart ached for her as I watched them. I couldn’t help my gaze from constantly drifting to Ransom. Even training in slow-mo, he was a thrill to observe. He was as graceful as a gazelle, and as deadly as the fiercest wild cat. I focused on him for a few more seconds before turning my attention to the other sicari training.

Ransom had been acting strangely since yesterday. He’d been gone when I awoke and returned with a lame excuse of scouring the Darklands for more sicari in hiding. I just hoped he hadn’t been out hunting for blood again. He seemed to have his cravings under control lately. I ran my fingers over the matching pin pricks on my neck—or rather where they should’ve been. Ransom was adamant he’d heal me after every feed, and he swore I was more than enough for him. Still, I couldn’t help the twinge of doubt.

Another sicari newbie caught my attention from the corner of my eye. The young girl sparred with one of the queen’s men. The vampire had her pinned to the floor, her stake just beyond her reach. She wriggled beneath him, but she was no match against his strength. His fangs descended, and he snapped at her neck. In real life, she would’ve been dead.

I marched over, unable to stop myself and crouched down beside her. “Never give up,” I cried. “If you can’t find your weapon, you have to be smart. Use any and all advantages. Strength, speed, agility-- fangers have the upper hand in all those things, but there’s one thing in which even you can go toe-to-toe with them.”

“What?” she gasped.

I pointed at my temple, then eyed her free leg. The vamp had trapped her torso to the floor, but her knee had just enough room to cause some damage to the guy’s family jewels. “Use whatever you can.”

It was like a lightbulb went off in her brain. She jerked her knee up, landing a solid hit to his crotch. He rolled off her, squealing.

The girl leapt up and grabbed her weapon, rewarding me with a smile. “Thanks.”

“When a vampire gets kicked in the balls, it hurts just as bad as for a human.” I shot her a wink. “There’s no such thing as cheating when you’re fighting for your life, got it?”

She nodded quickly.
